Summary

Face your demons。。。 or feed them。

The dashing young king, Nikolai Lantsov, has always had a gift for the impossible。 No one knows what he endured in his country's bloody civil war--and he intends to keep it that way。 Now, as enemies gather at his weakened borders, Nikolai must find a way to refill Ravka's coffers, forge new alliances, and stop a rising threat to the once-great Grisha Army。

Yet with every day a dark magic within him grows stronger, threatening to destroy all he has built。 With the help of a young monk and a legendary Grisha general, Nikolai will journey to the places in Ravka where the deepest magic survives to vanquish the terrible legacy inside him。 He will risk everything to save his country and himself。 But some secrets aren't meant to stay buried--and some wounds aren't meant to heal。

Rating: 3。5/5As Nikolai, Zoya, and Nina are among my favorite characters, I loved getting to see more of them。 Nikolai and Zoya’s backstories were certainly more fleshed out and getting their narration gave me a better understanding of their characters that I think was missed in the Shadow and Bone trilogy。 For all three characters, King Of Scars was a much needed continuation of their stories。 For the most part, I liked how Nina’s grief was handled。 I definitely liked how Nikolai and Zoya were Rating: 3。5/5As Nikolai, Zoya, and Nina are among my favorite characters, I loved getting to see more of them。 Nikolai and Zoya’s backstories were certainly more fleshed out and getting their narration gave me a better understanding of their characters that I think was missed in the Shadow and Bone trilogy。 For all three characters, King Of Scars was a much needed continuation of their stories。 For the most part, I liked how Nina’s grief was handled。 I definitely liked how Nikolai and Zoya were forced to confront their demons… both literally and metaphorically。 I loved getting caught up in all that’s been happening in Ravka and getting to watch Nikolai, Zoya, and Nina grow and heal。However, there were some aspects of King Of Scars that I didn’t like。 I found the first half of the book to be slow。 Most of the action was towards the end。 I also didn’t like just how separate Nina’s story was from Zoya and Nikolai’s。 Switching between two plotlines every few chapters made it harder to really get into the story。 Nina’s story started out really strong。 We got to see her dealing with her grief over Matthias’ death。 Matthias’ burial scene was beautifully written。 My only problem was that it seemed like Nina buried her grief with him。 After the burial scene, her grief isn’t really mentioned again which I don’t feel is entirely realistic。 Her new love interest is also introduced immediately after。(view spoiler)[ Probably my biggest complaint is the Darkling’s return。 I think it made the conclusion of the Shadow and Bone trilogy seem pointless。 I also don’t think it made a lot of sense。 The way he was brought back was just too much of a stretch。 (view spoiler)[ (hide spoiler)] (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

4。5The Six of Crows books still have my heart, but this was a really good read。 You can really see that Leigh Bardugo has hit her stride since The Grisha Trilogy - this book has great characterization, great worldbuilding, and yes, great relationships。This is, really, two books wrapped up in one。 On the one hand, we have a story about Nikolai, Zoya and their friends attempting to hold Ravka together while everything that could possibly go wrong, goes wrong。 You can tell how fiercely these people 4。5The Six of Crows books still have my heart, but this was a really good read。 You can really see that Leigh Bardugo has hit her stride since The Grisha Trilogy - this book has great characterization, great worldbuilding, and yes, great relationships。This is, really, two books wrapped up in one。 On the one hand, we have a story about Nikolai, Zoya and their friends attempting to hold Ravka together while everything that could possibly go wrong, goes wrong。 You can tell how fiercely these people love their country, and how much they want to protect the Grisha。 I loved learning about the politics of this world, even if I wasn't quite as into the stuff about the magic system。And then there's the other storyline: Nina dealing with the events of Crooked Kingdom and fulfilling the promise she made。 I'll admit it took me a while to really get into this storyline, but once it clicked, I looked forward to every one of Nina's chapters。 I can't share much without spoilers, but WOW, Nina blew me away in this book。 Every character she interacted with was amazing, too, and I'm just。。。 in awe of how good the worldbuilding was in her chapters。 I'm so, so excited to see where this goes。Splitting a book into two different storylines like this is always a risk, and here it kind of works and kind of doesn't。 Following two stories at once keeps you engaged, making sure the suspense is dragged out over many pages and it's very difficult to put the book down。 But the storylines never really converge, and that makes the book feel a bit disjointed。 I'm glad I waited a bit before reading this。 If I'd gone into this expecting something like Six of Crows, I would have been frustrated and disappointed。 Instead, I went in with an open mind, and I ended up loving it。 。。。more

I am having an extremely hard time breathing after that ending。 As soon as I read those last words, I slammed the book shut, waved it around maniacally, and screamed。 I am in shock and complete awe。 Leigh has done it yet again! Now, I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’m going to try to forget that ending and move on to other things。 So, let me just start by saying Nikolai is my boy, and I knew I would love this book immensely simply because he has a major role in it。 I love his cocky, sarcastic I am having an extremely hard time breathing after that ending。 As soon as I read those last words, I slammed the book shut, waved it around maniacally, and screamed。 I am in shock and complete awe。 Leigh has done it yet again! Now, I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’m going to try to forget that ending and move on to other things。 So, let me just start by saying Nikolai is my boy, and I knew I would love this book immensely simply because he has a major role in it。 I love his cocky, sarcastic swagger and the way he uses it to hide his scars。 Every second he was on the page, I had this huge grin on my face。 And every second he wasn’t, I missed him deeply。 And yet, I loved every page of this book。 I loved seeing Nina be a badass spy and cope with the loss with Matthias (which I am still not over btw!)。 I especially loved Zoya and getting to know her character better and watching her grow。 I loved seeing familiar characters that I missed immensely。 And I loved the plot of this story and all its twists and turns。 I cannot wait to read Rule of Wolves!! 。。。more

Respectfully, and not to be mean: what the hell did I just read。 I don't really know how describe my dislike with this book。 I knew I signed up for a slow dive into Ravka's political problems。 But still, what?? Nina's story felt completely disconnected from Zoya and Nikolai's。 Every time I'd get really invested in one of the two, it would switch, and I'd have to begin the process all over again。 I just didn't really see the point of any of it? Especially whatever the heck was happening with the Respectfully, and not to be mean: what the hell did I just read。 I don't really know how describe my dislike with this book。 I knew I signed up for a slow dive into Ravka's political problems。 But still, what?? Especially whatever the heck was happening with the Saints。 Is there a metaphor there? Yes, duh。 Do I understand it? Absolutely not。 ALSO。 THAT ENDING。 WHAT THE HELL。 I'm so frustrated with the weirdly abstract but still strangely dull path this book took。 There was no buildup, no payoff; just a monotonous read from a typically very engaging author。 Since the cast is entirely comprised of the coolest characters from Shadow and Bone (and Nina, who was my favorite from Six of Crows), I expected a little more energy。 But even as the book was exploring their grief, each scene just dragged。Though, one bright side that kept this from becoming a 1-star read: the WOMEN。 Zoya and Nina are the loves of my life and I'm so happy to see a potential sapphic romance for Nina。 I'm still going to read Rule of Wolves and keep up with the series, but jeez, this is not what I wanted。 。。。more
